zone focusing

Definition: Technique of pre-setting focus of lens for a certain distance in anticipation of action or movement taking place within a zone delivering an image of acceptable sharpness. * Used e.g. in close, fast-moving situations such as crowds where there is no time, even for auto-focus mechanisms, to focus each shot. * Much reliance is placed on depth of field for acceptably sharp images so it is most often used with wide-angle lenses. * Do not confuse with pre-set focus.
