work-station
Definition: (1) Powerful, stand-alone computer i.e. with fast, often multiple, processors, large amounts of RAM etc. usually designed for specialist applications e.g. animation creation, 3D rendering etc. (2) Complete set-up of computer directly connected to all the input and output devices it needs to carry out its tasks e.g. digital imaging work-station may include, besides basic computer, DVD-RAM writer, film-scanner, flat-bed scanner, film-writer, graphics tablet and so on. (3) Computer terminal connected to a network, often with limited resources if it relies on network for e.g. mass storage.
