watermark
Definition: (1) Mark left on paper to identify maker or type by creating a design on the wire side of paper-making frame. (2) Element in a digital image file used to identify the copyright holder. * A visible graphic element is created that (a) renders the image unsuitable for reproduction and (b) cannot easily be removed but allows the image to be assessed for use.* This discourages copyright infringement (but also discourages legitimate use). * Compare with fingerprint, which is an invisible component of digital file. (3) Defect on negative or print caused by deposition of solutes as water dries out.
