Definition: Transparent dyed or coated glass or plastics material used to (1) simulate effect of certain film or lighting e.g. red or amber filter simulates the tonal rendering of colours in black & white materials: largely obsolete (2) improve focusing accuracy in black & white printing when a blue filter is used in conjunction with a poorly corrected enlarging lens: largely obsolete as most modern enlarging lenses are adequately corrected for chromatic aberration.
