vector graphics

Definition: (1) Definition of graphical elements by a programming language in terms of primitives e.g. lines which are manipulated e.g. rotated, extended, stroked etc and areas are filled. * Such a description is said to be 'resolution independent'.* Literally: vector is a quantity with magnitude and direction. * PostScript is the best-known vector-based programming language. * Vector-based files usually have to be interpreted or rendered into bit-mapped files for use in eg printing or viewing. * Also known as page description language; object-oriented graphics. (2) Type of display in which the graphics are described mathematically.
