tone control
Definition: Alteration of image densities in small, local, areas or globally, with uniform changes or changes in proportion to existing densities: (1) with analogue or silver-based process can be achieved by (a) altering camera exposure or (b) altering exposure on printing or (c) burning-in or dodging during printing or (d) changing development or processing conditions or (e) using different materials or (d) toning existing print or negative. (2) with digital processes can be achieved by (a) using controls such as curves, levels, contrast or brightness or (b) using digital equivalents of burning-in or dodging or (c) altering printer settings (d) printing to different papers. * Also known as tonal control.
