tanning

Definition: The hardening of gelatin emulsion using e.g. ultraviolet light. * Usually the layer of gelatin is exposed through a contact negative so that dense areas in the negative are protected (remain soft) and low density in the negative leads to tanning of the emulsion underneath. * Used e.g. in gum dichromate process.
