substage condenser

Definition: Optical assembly used to collect light and focus it on a microscope specimen. * Consists of achromatic light condenser placed between a light-source and the specimen locating stage. * In inverted microscopes, the condenser is of course above the stage, but in most instruments the condenser is indeed under the stage.
