spot colour

Definition: In printing, a plate that carries solid colour to provide simple blocks or lines of colour, usually where black is the only other ink being used. * As this may not be a process colour i.e. does not use CMYK inks, it is possible to achieve effects beyond the reach of CYMK e.g. metallic finishes or fluorescent colours. * A clear varnish to give a high-gloss finish may be also be the 'colour': hence spot varnish.
