spindle speed
Definition: Rate of rotation of disk or platters of a hard-disk drive, of CD or DVD in drive. * Usually constant, and measured in rpm: rotations per minute. * Spindle is the central metal spike or other axis on which rotation takes place. * Low speeds are about 4000 rpm; fast about 10,000 rpm and up. * Generally, the higher the speed, the shorter the access time.
