Definition: Sudden, short-lived and massively large rise in voltage of an electrical supply which may threaten the equipment being powered. * Usually due to lightning strike or when power returns after a power cut or outage. * It is essentially to protect computers, TV sets, hi-fi, etc. against spikes where lightning strikes or outages are common.
