scratch
Definition: Surface defect which is longer than it is wide. * A scratch on film can be troublesome to remove: some scanner software are capable of automatically processing a scratch out of the image. * A scratch on a polished optical surface e.g. of a lens may be unsightly but by itself usually causes no visible image degradation.
