scattering

Definition: Diffusion of light as it reflects off small particles or bubbles or penetrates translucent material. * Change in the spatial distribution of light due to interactions with material similar in size to wavelength. * Note wavelength of light is not changed, but as scattering increases inversely with wavelength, there may be an apparent shift in colour.
