scale
Definition: (1) Range of exposures to which a sensitive material responds. * A long-scale paper responds to a wide range of exposures i.e. it is low-contrast. (2) Range of tones which a system is capable of reproducing. * Matt surface papers offer a narrow or short scale, colour monitors can reproduce a very wide or long scale of tones.
