sampling
Definition: Process of taking measurements of a small but representative part of a larger whole in order to make deductions about or to reconstruct the whole e.g. measuring the strength of an analogue signal at regular intervals (usually at intervals shorter than the shortest wavelength). * A continuously changing variable is thereby turned into a series of discrete values. * Key step in quantisation or digitisation of constantly changing values.
