Definition: Work- or dark-room illumination coloured or filtered so to not fog sensitive materials but provide enough light to work in. * Normal lamps e.g. flourescent tubes may be filtered to eliminate harmful wavelengths or specifically coloured sources with narrow band emissions e.g. LEDs may be used. * The colour of safelight varies according to the material being processed: amber or orange is suitable for most black & white printing papers, holography or PMT film; deep green may be used for inspection processing of black & white film. * For working with colour materials, the safelight may be infra-red but infra-red viewers must be used. * Also known as safelamp.
