Definition: (1) Computation to create the appearance of a fully formed object using data from outline drawings, data on shading of the surface and information about light sources. * Used in 3-D modelling programs, architectural CAD systems etc. (2) Computation that turns outline data into a specific form for use by other programs or device e.g. turning the work files of applications such as Live Picture or xRes into printable files. * Often used in sense of converting resolution-independent information e.g. vector-based graphics into a file of specific resolution for specified purpose e.g. printing. (3) Reproduction or simulation of tone in e.g. print.
