Definition: (1) Distribution of tones in an subject which gives the impression of depth or three-dimensionality when seen in a two-dimensional image. (2) Reconstruction of the experience of seeing three-dimensional objects by viewing stereoscopic images to give the appearance of depth and distance. (3) Distance between viewer's eye and eyepiece which gives a clear view through the optical instrument. * Low or narrow relief indicates the eye must be nearly in contact with the eyepiece, long or high relief indicates a larger distance, usually to accommodate wearers of spectacles.
