posterization

Definition: Representation of an image using a relatively very small number of different tones or colours which results in smooth tonal transitions being rendered as bands of different tones with flat areas of colour. * Seen where the colour range or grey-scale available are a long way short of what is needed to represent the image realistically e.g. where bit-depth of colour monitor is too low.
