paraxial

Definition: Ray or bundle of rays or point which lie or lies close to the optical axis. * How near may be determined by how accurately Gaussian optics describe the rays' behaviour: if they do, the rays are paraxial, within the permitted errors. * It may also be taken that the aperture is extremely small. * Also called first-order optics or Gaussian optics.
