palette

Definition: (1) In drawing, image manipulation programmes etc., a set of tools e.g. brush shapes and their controls presented in a small window that is active together with other palettes and the main document window. (2) Range or gamut of colours available to a colour reproduction system e.g. monitor screen, photographic film or paper, depending on the colour characteristics of phosphors, dyes or processing used. (3) Specific data set of colours that can be addressed by a system to reproduce a range of colours e.g. as used in now obsolete video graphics standards.
