over-sampling

Definition: Process of improving reproduction quality by digitising or quantising the source at a frequency or resolution that is higher than that which is strictly needed or is normal. * In scanning, an image captured at 42-bit has been over-sampled if it is to be used at 24-bit. * May be referred to as over-scanning.
