off-set

Definition: (1) Verb: to transfer ink or dye from one surface to another before printing on final surface. (2) Adjective: ~ lithography: that which transfers ink from the plates to a rubber mat which then transfers the ink to the paper. (3) Noun: alignment of calibration or other marks or parts of image to achieve required effect: e.g. shadows for lettering are off-set from the text to achieve their effect; fiducial or crop marks may be offset to distinguish left from right.
