non-linear

Definition: Adjective: (1) Relationship between two variables which is not constant e.g. response of film to light is non-linear. * The output from the sum of two inputs cannot be deduced by calculating the inputs separately. (2) Data stored in such a way that it is accessible or editable in any order: e.g. music clips on hard-disk; this is in contrast to linear data such as tape or wire which can be read sequentially only. (3) Optics of certain characteristics of laser light some of which are cumulative in effect.
