muddy
Definition: Appearance of print in which tone reproduction is low in contrast, lacking deep blacks or brilliant whites. Not scientific, but who cares? When you've seen one muddy print, you'll be able to spot another one at fifty yards. Take a hint: tear the offending (and possibly offensive) item up into little bits and start again. There is no point trying to retrieve a muddy print.
