Definition: The amount of light emitted or reflected from a surface. * The luminous intensity emitted or reflected from a surface, measured in candelas per square metre. * A surface with luminance 1 candela per square metre emits or reflects 1 lumen per square metre into one steradian (measure of solid angle: about six and a quarter steradians cover a hemisphere). * Also known as brightness.
