linear

Definition: Adjective: (1) ~ relationship, ~ property: one in which one variable varies proportionally with another; one in which the input to output ratio is constant. * Also known as a straight-line relationship. (2) ~ magnification: ratio of image width to subject width e.g. if 24x36mm is enlarged to 48x72mm, the linear magnification is 2. * The area magnification is 4. (3) ~ perspective: one in which the perception of depth or distance is produced by seeing the convergence of lines known in real life to be parallel. (4) ~ scale, ~ series: measure or sequence of numbers which the same gap lies between each number -- they are equally spaced -- e.g. the Celsius scale or metre rule is linear, as is the Exposure Value series but the f/number or ASA film speed series are not.
