Definition: Projection from an optical instrument to the object it is pointed at or focused on: usually applied to distances much greater than the focal length e.g. object being viewed by telescope. * Projection of the optical axis of an instrument to the centre of the subject field. * Note: it may not necessarily be a straight line due to refraction effects in the atmosphere or to motion.
