leader

Definition: Length of material used to load film onto machinery so that the working part of the film is in position when the machinery is properly prepared. * E.g. film leader connects the film canister or roll to the take-up spool before the camera is closed and made light-tight: then the leader can be wound on until the first frame is in position.
