Definition: (1) Metaphor for the manipulation of multiple virtual objects in applications software e.g. page layout, image manipulation which locates each object in a layer, one on top of each other. * Several layers may be created and it is usually possible to change the order of them, thus changing their relationships and interactions. (2) Set of protocols determining a level services, etc. within a suite of communications protocols.
