kernel
Definition: (1) Group of pixels, usually a square from 3 pixels to any number of pixels across (generally up to maximum of 60+), that is sampled and mathematically operated on for certain image processing techniques e.g. filtering for noise reduction, sharpening, blurring. * Takes name from the fact that it's the central pixel in the square that is real the target of the processing, based on the stuff surrounding it. (2) The core portions of an operating system that must be present constantly in memory, controlling disk input-output and tracking central memory, for the whole computer to work.
