interrupts
Definition: Signals to the central microprocessor of a computer to tell it to stop while e.g. new data is loaded or the contents of memory banks are shuffled. After this interruption to its thinking, the microprocessor can continue. * Interrupts greatly slow up a single processor but do not affect parallel processors so much: while one processor sorts out input/output, the another can continue calculating.
