Definition: Noun: (1) In optics: an object at infinity is so distant, the light rays from it are, for all purposes, parallel. (2) In geometrical optics: the image of an object at infinity lines on a lens' principal focal plane. (3) The maximum attainable gamma for a given film/developer regime: as in gamma ~. (4) In computing: instruction or loop that repeats endlessly unless terminated by e.g. re-booting. (5) Adjective: ~ stop: mechanical detent or limit on focusing mechanism of optics at which objects at infinity should be sharply focused.
