hints
Definition: Artifical intelligence built into outline fonts which turn elements of a font on or off according to the size of the font to improve legibility, balance and design. * For example, if the serif of a very small point size letter were kept in proportion to the x-height when enlarged to poster size, it would look much too big: hints reduce the size of the serif and change its shape as point size increases. * Hints are also required when rasterizing outline fonts for display on-screen.
