Definition: Changes or transitions in a characteristic or quality of a part of an image e.g. its lightness, texture, density either wihin an area of the image or between one area and another. * May be described as 'smooth', or 'even': the transitions are not sudden or broken into discernible steps; or 'uneven', 'posterised', 'poor': the transitions show sudden changes where one expects smoothness.
