gamut
Definition: Extent or range of colours which a given system is capable of producing or representing. * Gamut of, e.g. three-ink printing system, is more limited or smaller than that of a four-ink system, which in turn may be smaller than that of a colour monitor using three primary colour phosphors.
Gamut, match and set
The usual way to display gamut graphically is to draw a boundary over a range of colours so that colours within that boundary are 'within' gamut. Unfortunately, the graphical device usually used is the CIE Chromaticity diagram: this displays the gamut of hues accurately but not lightness or darkness. For this, we need a three-dimensional diagram to display gamut.
