Definition: Area of the retina containing mainly cone cells each connected to its own ganglion, with no supporting cells: it has the greatest acuity (resolving power and colour discrimination) of the retina. * It lies in the centre of the macula lutea or yellow spot and is about 1.5mm in diameter, and the visual field is about 5<. * Anatomical name: fovea centralis.
