Definition: (1) Presentation technique in audio-visual or multimedia shows in which image is made to darken from full brightness to black i.e. fade out; or emerge to full brightness from black i.e. to fade-in. (2) Gradual loss of density in a silver or dye image over time caused by deterioration. * Can be due to one or more of following (a) inherent instability of chemicals making up image (b) bleaching due to action of light (c) bleaching due to action of chemicals in material (d) bleaching due to action of pollutants in support material, in air or storage conditions (e) decay of support material (f) biological action on gelatin e.g. fungus attack. (3) Change of a colour in strength, hue, brightness or darkening -- or any combination of such changes.
