equatorial mount

Definition: Stand for optical equipment e.g. telescope designed to allow stars to appear stationary during rotation of the earth. * The mount is articulated so that one axis (the polar) that can be set parallel to the earth's axis of rotation and another axis (the declination) that is at right angles to the first axis. * If the e.g. telescope is turned at a rate of one revolution in 24 hours about the polar axis by a clockwork or motor mechanism the same part of the heavens are seen in the field of view.
