electronic shutter

Definition: Type of camera shutter which uses electronics to control shutter time. * Strictly an electro-mechanical shutter: the shutter mechanism may of the type that can be controlled by clockwork or other mechanical timing device or may of type that must be controlled by an electronic circuit. * Advantages of electronic shutter over mechanical one are (1) more accurate timings at short and long duration (2) more compact mechanisms possible (3) direct control by exposure system possible. * Disadvantage: (1) necessity of electrical power source (2) more difficult to service.
