edge sharpening

Definition: Process of making edges easier to see, therefore appearing sharper - usually by digitally creating a slight local increase in contrast at image boundaries using so-called sharpening filters. * Various techniques are available to image processing: some are better at sharpening lines, others have a side-effect of making noise more visible while others may suffer from defect of shifting slightly the position of boundaries. * Do not confuse with the filter called "find edges" which simply locates edges and removes everything else. * Also called edge enhancement.
