dye sublimation
Definition: Printer technology based on rapid heating of dry colourants held in close contact with a receiving layer turns the colourants to gas (without an intervening liquid phase i.e. it sublimes) which transfers to and solidifies on the receiving layer. * Colourants or dyes are usually carried on ribbons, one for each colour separation, and applied one separation at a time onto the receiving layer which is specially coated to receive the dyes. * As the image is built up of clouds of dye, it can closely resemble a photographic print.
