Definition: Mathematical manipulation that turns data of variation in two-dimensional space (e.g. pattern of lines) into representation as data of frequency changes (e.g. frequency of the lines). * It moves information from the spatial domain into the frequency domain. * It is a vital part of image compression routines used e.g. in JPEG and MPEG.
