dichroism

Definition: (1) Optical phenomenon of certain materials in which light is selectively transmitted or reflected depending on its wavelength. * The colours of such materials change with (a) the thickness of the material, (b) illumination or (c) angle of viewing. (2). Optical phenomenon of certain, usually crystalline, materials in which light is selectively absorped according to its plane of vibration with respect to an axis of the material.
