Definition: (1) Subjective assessment of the clarity and quantity of detail visible in a test image produced by an optical or imaging system. * (2) Assessment of optical or imaging system, based on assessment of the clarity and quantity of detail visible in a test image. * Objectively measured in an optic by considering parameters such as resolution and contrast for the image produced by the system. * For photographic negative or print, other relevant parameters (which may have to be excluded or accounted for) include: acutance, granularity, gamma and other factors such as edge effects.
