dark-field condenser

Definition: Design of light-concentrating device to cause object to be seen as a bright against a black background: light is formed into a hollow cone-shaped beam of light focused on the plane of the object. * Used primarily in microscopy. * The objective must have a numerical aperture smaller than that of the hollow beam so the only light entering the objective is that scattered by the specimen.
