Definition: The sudden, unexpected and always thoroughly unwelcome non-functioning of a computer. * Due to one or a combination of the following sadly not comprehensive list: (a) a fault or problem in a program e.g. a bug (error in programming) (b) interference from virus or corrupted file (e.g. an 'end-of-string' message in the middle of a string of data (c) error in reading or using a stored file (d) failure of a hard-disk e.g. damage to the read/write head (e) transient change in power supply e.g. sudden, brief drop in voltage (f) conflict between programmes or their calls to the system via extensions, settings. * Also known as a bomb.
