coupled rangefinder
Definition: Mechanism of camera that integrates the rangefinder measurement with the lens focusing mechanism: as the rangefinder determines an object's range the lens is automatically focused.
It takes two to range-find
Formerly the term was applied to a mechanical linkage, e.g. a cam and lever, in which rangefinding and focusing of the lens occurs simultaneously thanks to the interconnection. Now it also refers to electro-mechanical links between auto-focus ranging and the lens. In this the range is first determined, then resulting the data is used in a separate operation to drive a stepper motor which sets the lens.
