contrast threshold

Definition: The contrast level at which two areas have a just perceptible brightness difference at a given brightness level. * E.g. a lens may quote a high resolving power but if that is at a contrast below threshold, the resolution is wasted perceptually, although manipulations such as unsharp masking may reveal the detail.
