computer-to-plate

Definition: CTP: workflow in mass printing in which page-layout files are used directly to create printing plates. * This process avoids the usual steps including production of page-layout separation films which need to be stripped or laid precisely onto foils for plate-making. * Disadvantages include difficulty of proofing (has to be digital i.e. soft-proof) prior to print-run and cost of correcting mistakes. * Also known as direct-to-plate.
